Information for new Pilots

Hi, thank you very much for showing an interest in the V-Bird Virtual Airline Group. On behalve of all the staff members and our pilots we would like to welcome you to our website. On this page you will be shown an overview of what the V-Bird VA Group has to offer and hopefully convince you to join our great community.

At the V-Bird VA Group you will be warmly greeted by a group of flight simulator enthousiasts who try to make the most out of their hobby and want to have fun. The word 'fun' is one of the key characteristics within our organisation which has always been and always will be our #1 priority. Therefore we are looking for people with an interest in the world of (virtual) aviation and with a desire to go a step beyond their basic flight simulator setup, to grow as a virtual pilot and make a difference within our Group to get as much satisfaction out of it as they want.

In the last couple of years the V-Bird VA Group has been formed by the needs and suggestions of its members, and therefore, as of today, we have a lot to offer to a broad range of people.

To start with you might have noticed already that there are actually a couple of virtual airlines within our group. Again our community is driven by the needs of its members and therefore every airline has its own characteristics and theme. As you are joining a Group it does not really matter which airline you pick because you will have access to every airline. The result is you will be able to fly within the:

V-Bird Virtual Airline
- the airline it all started with and is still considered the heart of our community, hence the name. The VBVA is the answer for pilots who want to fly modern day passenger and cargo flights all over the globe within a major airline. Its aircraft have the gorgeous distinctive livery after the reallife V-Bird which went bankrupt in 2004! V-Bird Virtual Airline
Virtual Classics Airlines - VCA is actually a kind of subgroup which is suited for people who like the old airlines when flying was still an adventure. VCA lets you fly for gone or bankrupted airlines like Pan Am, Air Holland, Dutchbird and Sabena, with more and even older airlines to come. Forget about FMCs and RNAV, do it the old fashioned way using VORs and landmarks. Virtual Classics Airline

To come back to the word 'fun'. It is our believe the word 'fun' does not entail strict rules and regulations, checks, exams or other obligations. We will not try to intimidate people with strict real-world airline procedures. The routes which are prepared for you are not obligatory. That's what makes the V-Bird Virtual Airline Group different from most other virtual airlines. We believe it should stay a hobby and therefore you will, within reason, be almost as free as a bird! We allow you to fly basically whatever aircraft you like (except military) to wherever you want! Apart from some minor behavioural and administrative rules all we ask of you is that you make at least one (1) flight a month.

Over the years the VBVA Group has grown a massive flight database with many different flights from many different hubs. By now we have over 10.000 routes for you to choose from, and it's updated with new flights on a continuous basis! If you wish to fly somewhere else you are free to do so as well, as this is our promise to you. All these routes are stored within our integrated VA system and can be searched and looked at via our website. We also provide you with timetables making it possible to see routes per airport.

Every route has its own Pilot Brief giving you all the details you need for your flight, including METARs, NOTAMs, aerodrome charts and enroute Significant Weather and Wind charts. Apart from all this if you choose to fly online on IVAO you can download the flightplan for easy uploading into Ivap!

The great thing about our database is that our logging tools recognise the flights and therefore require less hassle for you 'filling in the paperwork'.

Flight Schedules

The V-Bird VA Group offers its pilots a large database of downloads! In the downloads section of our website are currently over 90 downloads awaiting you. Most of these downloads are liveries for freeware and payware aircraft addons, for both Flight Simulator 2004 and Flight Simulator X. Other downloads are for example tours and manuals describing various pieces of software.

Within the VBVA Group people are working constantly on increasing the number of aircraft repaints/liveries. Only a selected number of aircraft are 'official fleet' aircraft, other aircraft repaints are made on pilot's request! Again, we do not put any restrictions on the use of official fleet aircraft, you are allowed to fly whatever you want (except for military aircraft).

Our database currently only holds liveries for the V-Bird Virtual Airline. We've done this deliberately to save precious server space as the liveries for the other airlines can all be found on the large international flight simulator sites.

Download Database

At the V-Bird Virtual Airline Group we do not force our members to fly online, we do highly recommend it though! It is absolutely your choice whether you fly offline or online. The main network we use for our online flying is IVAO, where we are also a fully registered VA on. VATSIM and OnlineSim are networks we also use. The great thing about the IVAO network is that we have our own aircraft liveries installed on their system, this means that when flying online you will see others in V-Bird aircraft! Another thing we have on the IVAO network is our own Company Channel on their TeamSpeak-server. This allows our pilots to have a chat with eachother when not flying under reader control. The many online flying events we organize are held on the IVAO network.

A great feature available to our pilots when flying on the IVAO and/or VATSIM network is the use of our Integrated PIREP System (IPS), see the Flight Logging section for more information!

The V-Bird VA network is a very small and user friendly network which we use for beginners and training sessions and Online Events! We highly recommend this network for those who are a bit hesitant to online flying but would like to give it a try.

Within the V-Bird VA Group we put great emphasis on training and education. Due to our great members and community feeling most of our pilots are very supportive and helpful when others are having a problem with their setup or flying skills. Many of our members have years and years of experience using Flight Simulator and therefore will have answers to many of your queries. Our forum is a great way to get in touch with other people if you have any questions or just looking for new ideas.

Within the Group we have appointed trainers who are specifically there to help you and train you. Once you register with one of the Virtual Airlines you will automatically be contacted by one of these trainers if they can help you with anything and get you going. They will use today's solutions like Skype, Teamspeak or TeamViewer to give one-on-one support.

There are a few more support-solutions we offer you! A couple of times a year we organise get-togethers in Hilversum, the Netherlands, where we give workshops about certain aspects about our hobby. Apart from being very educative it is also a great day out with a lot of fun.

Our website is also packed with manuals. We have a special documentalist who is responsible for the making of all manuals and documentation of various software we use. These documents can be found in de download database. Another section of our website is the Pilot Education Center. In the PEC you will find written tutorials and videos about various aviation subjects which you may find handy when you leave for the virtual skies. Subjects vary from SIDs and STARs to weather decoding. For those of you interested in flying the Airbus, we have a special site full with information about this wonderful machine.

Pilot Education Center

Within the Virtual Airline Group we recognize the hard work and determination of our members. Therefore we have established a ranking and awarding system. This allows our pilots to actually 'grow' and have some sort of career. Our ranking system looks at how many hours you have flown and then determines your rank. When you first register with us you will start with zero hours at the rank of Second Flight Officer. If you have any transfered hours from another virtual airline these will be added to your total once you've flown 15 hours for us, your rank will be adjusted accordingly.

Like we said before it is our believe it is a hobby and should remain so, therefore we do not require you to make hundreds of hours before you're promoted. Our ranking system is designed in such a way that low hour members are promoted more quickly than people with a lot of hours in their logbook, this keeps it possible for all members with varying hours to always have something to look out for.

Next to the ranking system we make use of awards. Awards are given to those who have for example completed one of our tours or who contributed to one of our special events. Within the Group we do no longer recognize a Pilot of the Month or Pilot of the Year, just to avoid competition and simple because it would be unfair for others.

Ranking System

A virtual airline would not be a virtual airline if it requires you to log your flights, and so do we. We do recognize however that there are many different flight logging solutions around and that not everyone is as handy to deal with these tools. Therefore we have adopted our system in such a way to make it compatible with most flight logging software. We even have our own logging tool called 'V-Bird VA Acars' which is a very easy to use program.

At the moment it is possible to log your hours via: a manual PIREP; our own V-Bird VA Acars; the old FSACARS, FS Flight Keeper or our newest addition to our system, IPS!

IPS stands for Intergrated PIREP System and makes it possible for you not to have ANY logging software on your computer, everything will go automatically! What this system does is scanning the online network servers (IVAO and VATSIM) for pilots flying. If you are flying at one of these networks it automatically starts logging your flight. Once you have arrived at your destination it completes your PIREP and sends it to our system. This means you will not have to think about any logging or PIREPs while flying. Unfortunately the IPS only works when you fly online on IVAO or VATSIM.

Logging Solutions

At the V-Bird Virtual Airline Group we are very proud to have such a strong community. To keep this great strength and sense of cohesion we organise events almost every two weeks. These events usually take place on a Friday evening and last for about 2 hours. Events vary from normal flights with modern airliners to island hopping in the good old Lockheed Constellation!

As you might have guessed already these events are held on the IVAO network where we usually form the so-called 'V-Bird Train'. Whether you join these events is entirely up to you.

V-Bird wouldn't be V-Bird if we wouldn't allow our members to make a difference during these events. If you know any great places to go and fly or you have any other ideas about an event please let us know and we might just organise it!

If you have grown an interest in our virtual airlines and would like to join us please first read our pilot manual "How do I become a Pilot of the V-Bird Virtual Airline Group". This manual contains information on how to get started but also contains our Terms and Conditions. Although within the V-Bird VA Group these are very basic we do require you to respect them. To view this manual please press the link below. After you have read our T&C please press the Join-link to start the registration! Please be so kind to fill in the application form as correctly as possible to speed up the registration process. Our administrator will look at your form and put you into our system, hopefully with your requested callsign! Please be patient though as this may take some time.
